An Idea

Is anyone doing interesting play with typography in poems? By which I mean using typography as a tool to create a visual landscape of emotion? I’ve had this idea before, but right now I’m reading some typography books and it has brought the idea to mind again. I adore the way the appearance of the letters on my page evoke emotion in me. Maybe someone is already doing this. If they are, I haven’t found them, but would love to. I just remember from my university days that we were supposed to basically stick to Times New Roman or similar fonts when writing, or if font like that for your poetry. And you certainly weren’t supposed to mix types in one poem. But if you blend the idea of poetry with the idea of art, the visual becomes not only relevant but essential to the story, you’re trying to tell, or the moodscape you’re trying to create.

I’m going to experiment. I can do what I want. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. But what if I like what I create? I feel pure joy in the circuitry of my brain. I’m excited about this.

I might actually use a photo editor I have and type my poems on a white background because they have so many fonts that my word processor does not. Plus this is poetry fused with art. I think jpeg poems are a good idea.

If you’re doing this or have (read/seen?) someone doing something like this, please comment. I’d love to stumble on a treasure trove of such poetic art. Or such artful poetry. I’m not certain which to call it. Perhaps a new name is needed.
