I’m a Victorian Housewife

Trad wives are often compared to 50s housewives. That somewhat applies to me. I am very traditional. I wear dresses every day. As much as possible I wear jewelry to clean the house as well. I put my family first. I stayed home with my daughter before she started school. I am still at home now.

But I am Victorian in that I also study traditionally feminine accomplishments. I am learning embroidery and bread making. My husband manages all the money. I am given a spending allowance each pay period that I can spend however I want. If I desire to go over that amount, I ask.

I also (in the past) sometimes have had help with cleaning, something Victorian housewives usually had, but 50s housewives did not. I feel very grateful and privileged for the help I’ve had. It doesn’t mean I didn’t clean. There was still daily cleaning that had to be done. But hiring a cleaner took some of the heavier jobs off my shoulders. I do not have any help whatsoever this year, but when we move, I may hire someone again. Hiring someone, if you can afford it, is a wonderful thing to do.

I believe in the Victorian concept of separate spheres for men and women and that women belong at home.

I love the 50s housewife aesthetic, and sometimes I dress to it. But I’ve always been fascinated with the Victorian era, and really my life more closely resembles that.

I want my life to reflect the gentle beauty of femininity from the Victorian era. I love the frilly, beautiful dresses. The ladylike behavior. No pants. Separate spheres. All of that good stuff. So I’m kind of a 1950s/1850s hybrid with a contemporary twist.
