Benefits of Headcovering

God has called me to wear headcovers. I strive to wear them whenever I go out and frequently when I’m in the house as well. I take them off to eat because I don’t want to accidentally drop anything on one, and sometimes I take them off when I’m with my dogs so that they don’t hurt their paws or tear my veil when they jump on me. But the rest of the time, I wear them.

Yesterday I made a post on Instagram about why Christian women should wear headcovers, and today I want to blog about headcovering. This time, rather than make a scriptural argument as to why women should cover, I’m going to bypass that issue and instead focus on the benefits you receive from wearing a headcover.

First of all, it helps with modesty. Now this is tricky because in Christianity, headcovering has nothing to do with modesty itself. Unlike in other faiths such as Islam, showing your hair is okay. In the Christian faith, you cover to show that you submit to God and your husband. But it can make you more modest in the sense that you do not draw any sexually charged attention when you are wearing one. And although the veils can be very beautiful, you won’t feel like a fashion plate wearing a headcover on your head. It fosters humility. And if it’s a certain kind of head covering it can also cover the neckline of your dresses.

Men treat you better. When you present a purer image and look like a lady, especially a lady of faith, men are often more gentlemanly and gallant. Women are less likely to treat you as competition. All in all, I just have more positive interactions with people when I cover.

My veils remind me to submit to God and my husband. They are a visual and tactile reminder that I am under my husband’s headship and that I was made by God to be my husband’s helpmate. As a sinner, it’s good for me to have the reminder. My veils remind me to surrender and obey.

This kind of veil is called a mantilla. It does not cover my neckline. Mantillas are beautiful and I wear them from time to time, but infinity veils are usually what I prefer.
One of my lovely veils the day it arrived in the mail! This is an infinity veil, which is what I usually prefer.

My veils make me feel closer to God because they encourage me to seek Him more. We don’t fully understand, but we know that headcovering has spiritual significance. Scripture tells us women need to headcover because of the angels. The best theory I have heard about that line of scripture is that it is good for angels to see man worshipping and living in the righteous order designed by God. But we won’t be sure what it means until we die. I just feel good obeying the scripture. My veils remind me to pray and study the Bible.

Headcovering often reminds me to be better in my Christian walk. It is a constant reminder to be kind, charitable, submissive, and gentle. Maybe some women don’t need reminders, but reminders sure help me!

I have to headcover not only because of scripture but also because the Holy Spirit spoke to me and told me to do so. I fell away from wearing them for a while, and it was definitely detrimental to my Christian walk. So I came back to them. I highly recommend that every Christian woman try headcovering. If you don’t like veils, you can use a bandana or something else. Like the rest of scripture, the passage on headcovering is beneficial to us. If you haven’t tried headcovering, pray on it. See what the Holy Spirit says to you.
