Why Has the Blogosphere Gotten So Quiet?

I spent some time this afternoon searching for blogs to give me inspiration for articles and decoration ideas I might want for my own blog. And what I noticed was that pretty much every blog directory I found had blogs that were defunct. Some of them have closed websites and others just haven’t been updated in years. Often with no farewell message. The blogs just stop. I did stop this blog for several years, and only restarted it recently. But in the interim I was still blogging, just on another website. Why does it seem like so many people have drifted away from blogging?

I suspect some of it has to do with making money. There was such a push to make money with blogging, and I think everyone who was going to make money has made money doing it and everyone else gave up on the dream. But I don’t do it for money. I do it for fulfillment. I would have to be much more single-minded and focused if I was doing it for money!! I just enjoy writing, and like having the outlet and reaching out to readers.

Blogging to me is like journaling. I do periodically try to keep a paper journal since I love those, but blogging allows me to include pictures. It’s not the exact same as journaling. Although I’m pretty raw and honest here, I do have personal things in my life that I won’t put on a public blog. But it’s still a fulfilling way to document my life.

My favorite blogs are poetry blogs, art blogs, and daily diary blogs like mine. I adore reading about people’s lives and interests. I’m always looking out for more blogs to read. Seeing blogs just end makes me sad, and I always wonder what the blogger is up to now. I will probably be blogging on one website or another til I die.

  1. Two years late to comment on this post – but it still seems very real – lots of “gone now” signs when you click on comments… it does take time to blog, and I think a lot of people hold onto old sites so they can keep reading and commenting, but there is a lot of disappearing bloggers… seems a shame. 1. My biggest problem is time – it is so hard to juggle so many things – I like to read as much as I like to write – but I’m also a mother, wife, worker etc… I understand why people drift away – it’s not easy….
