Don’t Be Intellectually Lazy

Before I fell in love with being at home, I wanted to be a professor. I like debates and critiques. I adore scientific and philosophical inquiry. Poetry was going to be my focus (for my first grad degree), and I wanted rigorous feedback on my work. Research is my passion. In my senior year of college, I began research on the topic of synesthesia in poetry, and I wanted to turn that into a book.

Feedback on my writing is something I still long for and miss, but at times, I have been able to find that outside the university setting anyway. But thanks to interlibrary loan, MWR Library, Amazon, bookstores etc I have been growing my mind constantly over the past decade plus. Oceanography, biology, genetics, history, art history, astronomy, quantum physics, paleontology, psychology, sociology, and more have been my intellectual playground. There is always something new to know.

That’s one of the cool things about patriarchy and the trad wife life. We can study whatever we want. Men have to devote themselves to what pays the bills, so they have to give up their interests or narrow them down. I can enrich my mind across many disciplines without a care for what pays and what doesn’t. I am in many ways freer than my husband. Life at home can be intellectually rich and rewarding. It is up to the wife to make it so.

Don’t waste your down time on frivolous crap. Stay academically engaged so as to be sharp company and wise counsel for your husband. I learn something every day. Keep life interesting. A housewife should be well read. We have the opportunity to study what we want, thanks to the patriarchy.
