Stay at Home University

It’s my cute little name for the learning I’m pursuing outside of academia. I always thought I would go to grad school, but life had other plans, and I got married and had a baby. I got married to a wonderful man and had a wonderful little baby and I’ve never looked back since. Now I don’t even want to return to grad school. But that doesn’t mean that my love of learning has stopped.

I want to continue to educate my mind and intellectually grow despite being at home. If anything, being at home gives me more of an opportunity than most people have to study. Even people who go to grad school are often limited to studying only what’s in their subject area and frequently have to read only the books that they are told to because of time constraints. I’m very busy in the summer while Angelica is home from school or during the school year when I home school her, but when she goes to school or after her school day I’m free to read and study whatever I want. My book collection is absolutely superb. I’m always learning something.

Right now my chosen subject is prose poetry. I have invested in some great books on the subject.

I want to be as well read as I can be. I’m fortunate still be at home when my daughter is 8 and I don’t want to waste my time period so I go to the beach. I go to the library. I go to the bookstore.. Even online I’m constantly learning.

So if you see the tag that says stay-at-home University that is what I mean. Just like a girl whose name I forget started DIY MFA for people to try to do their MFAs themselves.. I’m trying trying to further my education on my own with the books at my disposal. And it’s working. I’m also kind of doing my own MFA. This summer I’m taking a prose poetry workshop and I’m thrilled about it. I don’t ever intend to go back into the University system, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop writing or learning.
